Manhattan was a dream of a film, the visual experience enhanced by the powerful Rhapsody in Blue. Hemingway was beautiful and so sincere in her affection for the lead (you). Quite moving. And your understanding of preoccupation with relationships as a way to avoid what you really want to know about existence was your muse stepping out of character to say this. The entire film is unforgettable and a love letter to Gershwin and New York. Thanks Woody. Exquisite. Breathtaking. You are a film poet❤️👏
I love the tonality of black and white, and it set 70’s Manhattan in a 30’s mood. I was pleased when I located the Park where the view of the 59th Street bridge was framed. I would visit Orwasher’s bakery when I came to the city, and the Met. I love having a feel of old New York, and Gershwin’s Rhapsody and the Cinematography of “Manhattan” heightened that romantic illusion. Then crazy drivers barreling down Fifth Avenue snaps you right out of it.
